I have to credit pinterest, once again. I had seen these chocolate cakes made in hollowed out oranges and thought they looked fantastic. Then, a couple days later I came across an even easier version that used canned cinnamon rolls. I thought this seemed like even less prep and mess, I decided to give them a go.
Campfire Orange Cinnamon Rolls
1 can of 8 cinnamon rolls
8 oranges
Aluminum Foil
I hollowed out our oranges. It was a bit of a messy juicy job, but why not when you are outside. I cut a 2 " circle out of the top and then used a spoon to scoop out the orange. We filled a bowl with the orange flesh and the kids munched on it. Then we simply stuck one cinnamon roll in each orange, put the cap back on, and then wrapped them in foil. We wrapped from the bottom up, so that the excess foil could be bunched up into a little handle. Then we put to right into the coals. They took about 12 mins to bake, but it really depends out your fire. While they were still piping hot, we put a little drizzle of the frosting included in the can on top of the cinnamon roll.
The orange totally protects the bread from the heat. The roll was perfectly orange infused and super moist. Even though the outside of the orange was charred and black, the inside was perfection.
And I just had to share these pictures of Olivia eating in the great outdoors. She is a total disaster and is absolutely cute.

ReplyDeleteYes Yes Yes. I am going to try these for Thanksgiving. Thank you for giving!
ReplyDeleteThis is such a brilliant idea! I'm totally doing this for our next camping trip this summer!
ReplyDeleteI do the orange cakes every time I go camping, I usually go camping for my birthday so its my birthday cake :) I do something just a little bit different, I keep seeing the oranges just cut a little on top and people are digging out the orange, that seems like you said messy. I have always just cut the orange right in half and used a spoon to just loosen the edges around the orange and the half orange just pops out, then we ate the oranges for breakfast or a snack. I poured the cake batter in one half , put the other empty half on top and carefully molded a piece of tinfoil around it , it does not have to be super molded to the orange, then place upright in the coals, you can start rolling it around in the coals in a few minutes, it will not leak out, I have done this many times it always comes out perfect. So for your cinnamon rolls you can cut the orange like I described and have less of a mess!!
ReplyDeleteCan this be done on a grill?
ReplyDeleteWhy not? Sounds good to me :)
DeleteYUM! Can't wait to try these out this summer. Thanks!!
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh, I can't wait to try these when we go camping on Monday!!
ReplyDeleteThese looked and sounded so delicious that I could not wait for a camping trip. We made them right inside in the fire! But what a complete disappointment! :( Maybe I scooped out too much of the pulp? But the cinnamon rolls were so bitter that we had to make extra icing just to be able to eat them. They were not any more moist than they are when baked in the oven, and not what I would describe as orange-infused. The bitterness of the orange peel was the dominant flavor. An expensive and time-consuming failed experiment.
ReplyDeleteSo sorry they didn't work for you. They are great every time we make them. We use Cali oranges, they are the best :)
DeleteI believe the mistake was they were put into a fire and not on coals.
DeleteA dutch oven on the fire would be a great addition to your difficulty. I have a set of fire irons and the dutch oven hangs on a chain over the fire and depending how close you get to the flames, if you need to have the flames will increase the heat in the dutch oven. Not to have the orange "hulls" sizzling is the best way to keep out the bitters.
DeleteThis looks amazing!
ReplyDeleteI've never heard of canned cinnamon rolls before. Where are they sold in the grocery store? I bet some chocolate cake would be a tasty alternative if I can't find any cinnamon rolls.
I'm always on the lookout for great camping recipes. Can't wait for summer to try this one out!

DeleteLooks delicious and we cannot wait to try it this spring :)
ReplyDeleteI think the word caned is a misnomer. They are in a tube in the cold section of the grocery store. They are a dough that pops out of the tube when you open the tube. You must keep refrigerated before you use them. Also I think the orange must NOT be completely removed or the bitter side of the skin will go into the dough.
ReplyDeleteIf anyone has ever made "Monkey Bread" you can do the same with just biscuits by cutting each one in quarters and rolling them in cinnamon sugar and then stuffing them in the orange hull.
